"How to Read Like a Writer" (Bunn)

Writing is a word-by-word and sentence-by-sentence process like Bunn claims in "How to Read Like a Writer". I never really realized that when we are reading that we read to learn about writing. Bunn suggests that when reading, we should examine what the writer writes. It's our choice how we choose to examine their work. What changes could the writer make to make their work better? If we were writing this, how would we do it differently? When examining the authors work we look at the choices they made when writing and we decide if we want to use the techniques they used or not. We decide what works best for us. Bunn uses the analogy of RLA which means reading like an architect. This means that when we read something, we are seeing how the work was constructed by the writer. We use what we like and create something similar. Two questions that Bunn suggests us to think about before reading a work are: What is the authors purpose for writing this work? & Who is the intended audience? I think that these two questions can really help you when examining the authors work. I think it will help you see if they nailed what they were trying to say to their specific audience. When reading, questioning why something was done the way it was and also thinking of ways to improve the writing will help you when it comes to your own writing later.

Trouble Finding An Interviewee

At first I didn't think that finding someone to interview was going to be very hard. But low and behold, it was much harder than I expected. I had emailed 3 photographers in the field that I wanted to go into but I had no response from any of them. 2 of them I knew would be touring with Vans Warped Tour all summer but still thought maybe they would let me Skype them for the interview but I didn't hear back from either one.

I was worried about not being able to find someone in my field to interview and I didn't want to show up to class empty-handed again. So I talked to my mom about it and her best friend is friends with a couple photographers. Of course I wanted to find someone on my own and in the field that I want to go into but I was running out of time before class. I got in touch with her friend and she set me up with an interview with him. She had told me that he was a sports photographer so when he gave me his Instagram, I was expecting to see all sports photography but it turns out that he has done some concerts and other types of photography. I was beyond excited to find this out. I was extremely disappointed that none of the photographers that I originally wanted to interview didn't respond but after seeing Jose Fajardo's work, I can say that I am already a huge fan. I am very excited to be able to interview him. I know that I had to go through connections to get this interview but I am very happy with who I ended up getting an interview with.

Check out his work on Instagram! @fuzyjoe

See y'all in class!

Email Draft

Dear Scott Uchida,
My name is Miranda Gliddon and I am a photography student at the Brooks Institute. After I graduate from Brooks I want to be a professional concert/band photographer. Moving out here to California from Oklahoma has inspired me to pursue a career in photographing bands.
In one of my classes right now we are learning about what kinds of writing an artist has to do in their field of work. For an assignment we have to interview an artist about their writing and what they believe to be effective or ineffective. I was wondering if you would have any time in between June 26th and July 1st to meet with me to talk about this and your photography? Thank you for taking the time to read this and I hope to hear back from you soon.

I'm really not good at writing professional emails so I am hoping after todays class that this email will sound a whole lot better.

Week 4 Reading

While doing the readings for this week, I found myself feeling like I should be taking notes. It felt like it was pretty much all rules for using social media and for writing a positive message. There seemed to be a lot of rules and only writing them down is going to help me remember while writing the email request. I remember learning about this in high school but since it's been 3 years, it was a good reminder especially since we're working on our email request drafts to the artist of our choice.
A good reminder tip from this reading was when requesting information or action in an email, to make it clear at what exactly you are requesting from the person. I often find myself not always being 100% clear and not just getting straight to the point. I really hope that after writing this email it will help me be clear about what I am asking and to get straight to the point.

Hope everyone is having a great week!

About Me

Hey y'all, I'm Miranda!

I am a 21 year old Pro Photo student. When I graduate, I want to be a live concert/band photographer. I have two dreams. The first one is to photograph my favorite band (which you'll find out about later in this post) live in concert. And my second dream is to have my photos published in the magazine, Alternative Press (AP).
Random basic facts: I moved here from Oklahoma but will always call Texas my home. Currently my hair is black and blue but that could change. My favorite color is black. I am an Aries. I love going to the beach even though recently I've been too busy to go. People might be surprised to know that I do play video games. I will admit though that I am not the best & Kingdom Hearts is my favorite game.

I have a Chihuahua Maltese named Eddie. He didn't move here to California with me but he is my baby and yes I do still spoil him even though he lives back in Oklahoma with my parents. Fun Fact: I named him Eddie because whenever I got him, his nails were so long they were like daggers. So naturally Edward Scissorhands came to mind. Edward was just too harsh of a name for a small sweet dog so I made it short and sweet. Eddie had his name before I had even gotten into the car to take him home(:

I love love love movies & music. My favorite movie changes all the time but currently my favorite is Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron. I've already seen it 3 times in the movie theater. Haha(:

Anyone who knows me, follows me on Pinterest or pays attention to my t-shirts know that I am obsessed with Black Veil Brides. They are my absolute favorite band. I could listen to their music all day everyday.. Kind of already do when I'm not busy with school haha.. I've been to two of their concerts within 4 months of each other this year and I can't wait to see them at Warped Tour in Pomona & also here in Ventura :D

Lastly, my family means everything to me. I would not be who & where I am today if it wasn't for them. Yes, we disagree but we are always there for each other. They have helped me through really hard times and were there for me when I really didn't deserve it. They are crazy, weird and annoying but I love them & I wouldn't have it any other way!

Just an FYI, my dad doesn't usually take silly pictures so this was pretty funny. It was made for kids so he had to get down on the ground just to be able to have his face peeking through, haha. (:

Thanks for reading!

Miranda(:

PS) As nice as Ventura is, I can't wait to graduate so I can move to LA.
